What is a traditional Naturopath?

Naturopathy and naturopathic medicine, is the fastest growing of all the alternative healing disciplines. As more people have become disillusioned with conventional health care, it has certainly gained new respect as a credible healing modality.

I specialize in non-invasive, lifestyle consultation. A Naturopath avoids diagnosing disease or prescribing medication. The principles which guide traditional naturopathy lead to general improvement in health. Commonly, clients find that long standing health problems have improved or disappeared. In fact, the greatest success of naturopathy is in rebuilding health, which then naturally improves or eliminates chronic illness.

Naturopaths focus on the client as a whole. They look to the cause of a health concern rather than suppressing symptoms. The naturopath works to educate his or her clients in how to stimulate the body’s own vital healing forces. Although all naturopaths emphasize choices based on their own personal interests and experiences, they maintain a consistent philosophy.

Holistic Doctors/ Traditional Naturopath avoid a number of procedures that are common to traditional health care.

            Among them are:

·         Diagnose disease. In determining the root cause of a client’s problems, Naturopaths perform

evaluations and analysis, but they do not diagnose disease.

·         Treat disease. In Naturopathy the focus is on health and education, not on treating any specific

disease. The Naturopath will teach clients how to create an internal and an external environment

that is conducive to good health.

·         Prescribe drugs and pharmaceuticals. Instead of prescribing, Naturopaths educate their clients,

who, in turn, make their own choices. A Naturopath may teach clients about the use of various

herbs  and homeopathic remedies, as well as about the healing properties inherent in other foods

and nutritional supplements. However, since drugs may be toxic to the body, Naturopaths do not

generally believe in the use of drugs.

·         Perform invasive procedures. These include major and minor surgery, as well as giving injections

and drawing blood, all of which are common in allopathic medicine. Some Naturopaths have training

and qualification in other forms of the healing arts and may help their clients by using such hands on

modalities such as reflexology or acupressure. There are Traditional Naturopaths who are also

         chiropractors, massage therapists, homeopaths, etc.

·         Prevent "dis-ease". In teaching their clients how to achieve a state of balance, Naturopaths are

helping them remain healthy into the future.
